{article/topic_title} 50th Year of Sheffield and District Squash League

Posted by webmaster on (181 views)
The 2023-24 season marks the 50th year of the Sheffield and District Squash League. To mark the occasion the league will be hosting an end of season event. The primary focus of this event is to get together socially and enjoy the sport we play and love. But what is sport without healthy competition?

The format of the event will be a mixed individual tournament based on the Monrad system. The tournament aims to integrate all levels within the league and there will be prizes at every level! The league will be covering costs, so entry is free. We want to encourage as many Sheffield and District League players past and present to take part. Matches will be best of 3 games to 11 and players should take part in a minimum of three matches depending on entrants.

The main day of the event will take place at 12:30pm on Saturday 20 April 2024 at Hallamshire Tennis and Squash Club. The first round of the tournament will take place at 7:00pm on Thursday 18 April 2024 at Doncaster Squash Club. This is to accommodate the (hopefully) large amount of matches that are required.

To enter please use this form on the website. Ensure you’re available for both dates, although if you have a really good excuse for missing the first round, then other arrangements can probably be made. The deadline for entries is Fri 12 April 2024.

At the event we would like to share any history of the league. So if you have any memorabilia, e.g. old photos, handbooks etc. please get in touch.

Enter here.

Format

The format can work for any multiple of eight players. However for simplicity this explanation is assuming a 64 draw.

For the first three rounds if you win, you go up, if you lose, you go down. This separates the draw into eight groups. From here it is a straight knockout resulting in eight champions! One at each level. So you can lose your first three matches and still win a group and a prize!
